SHS2 Design And Communication Technology · Semester 1, Week 8

Pattern Design

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.1.3.LI.2 - Develop appropriate drawing framework and necessary elements to create 2-dimensional templates and patterns.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify and state the purpose of a drawing framework (light outline, proportion lines, centre lines) in freehand drawing.
  2. Determine appropriate dimensions and proportions for a simple 2-dimensional template, such as a kente-inspired border strip or a repeating geometric motif.
  3. Demonstrate the step-by-step process of creating a drawing framework using soft strokes and light outlines on a sketch pad.
  4. Apply the framework to develop a detailed 2-dimensional template and pattern, adding balanced textures and ornamentations that form a cohesive design.
  5. Evaluate their own and peers’ work against given criteria for proportion, balance, and organisation, providing constructive feedback.

This lesson builds directly on Week 7 (selecting drawing materials and tools) and prepares learners for Week 9, where they will finalise their template and pattern design.

Pattern Design (1.3)
Content standard
2.1.3.CS.1 - 2.1.3.CS.1 Demonstrate knowledge and skill in using freehand drawing techniques to create 2-dimensional templates and patterns for concepts and designs. 2.1.3.LO.1 Apply the understanding and skills of creating templates and patterns to develop freehand-drawn 2-dimensional templates and patterns for new concepts and designs.
Indicator
2.1.3.LI.2 - Develop appropriate drawing framework and necessary elements to create 2-dimensional templates and patterns.
Suggested placement
Semester 1, Week 8 (Week 8 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Group work/Collaborative Learning; Problem-based Learning:
1. Learners in small groups brainstorm to determine appropriate dimensions and proportions for 2-dimensional free hand-drawn templates and patterns.
2. learners can refer to the small sketches they did in LI 1

Group work/Collaborative Learning; Problem-based Learning: Learners in small groups identify and develop steps to create 2-dimensional free hand-drawn templates and patterns. The steps can include drawing simple shapes or light outlines by using soft strokes to plan how the finished drawing will look. This will help as a rough guide for the drawing.

Group work/Collaborative Learning, Project-based Learning: Learners in small groups used the steps they developed to create 2-dimensional free hand-drawn templates and patterns with appropriate details, textures and ornamentations. As details are added to the 2-dimensional free hand-drawn templates and patterns, ensure that everything looks balanced and organised. Pay attention to how different parts of the created design come together to form a cohesive template and pattern.

Assessment (2.1.3.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
