SHS2 Design And Communication Technology · Semester 1, Week 7
Pattern Design
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.1.3.LI.1 - Select appropriate drawing materials and tools that can be used to create 2-dimensional free hand-drawn templates and patterns.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify at least six drawing tools and materials used for freehand 2-dimensional template and pattern drawing, stating the specific purpose of each.
- Differentiate between tools suited for sketching (pencils, charcoal) and those suited for finalising (drawing pens, ink) a template or pattern.
- Justify the selection of specific materials and tools for a given template or pattern project, considering factors such as the surface (paper, cardboard, foam) and the intended use (art, textiles, design).
- Demonstrate safe handling practices for all drawing tools and materials, including cutting tools like blades and knives.
- Collaborate effectively in mixed-ability groups to brainstorm ideas and reach a consensus on the theme and purpose of a template and pattern drawing project.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
Group work/Collaborative Learning: In mixed-ability groups, learners brainstorm to come up with ideas for drawing freehand templates and patterns. This could be a theme or an idea, and what the 2-dimensional template and pattern drawing is for; e.g. art, design, textiles, etc. Group work/Collaborative Learning: Project-based Learning: Learners in mixed-ability groups develop many small sketches and drawings based on their ideas to see which ones could work as 2-dimensional templates and patterns. Problem-based learning: Learners in mixed-ability groups identify and select appropriate materials and tools, such as pencils, pens, markers, saws, knives, blades, cardboards, wood board, foam, styrofoam, etc. for their free hand-drawn 2-dimensional template and pattern projects. Assessment (2.1.3.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning. Teaching and Learning Materials: - Models - Charts - reference books - drawing studio - access to internet - LCD Projector - sketches. - Pencils - Sketch pads - Erasers - Pencil sharpener - Drawing pens or ink - Blending stumps - Charcoal
