SHS2 Design And Communication Technology · Semester 1, Week 3
Concept Sketches
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.1.1.LI.3 - Use the idea of concept sketches to create complex designs with graphite pencil and coloured pencil sketches in freehand drawing.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify at least three complex forms in their environment and explain how they were built from basic shapes in a concept sketch.
- Combine two or more basic shapes to create a complex design in freehand drawing using graphite pencil.
- Apply at least two rendering techniques (hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, or blending) to add depth and texture to a graphite concept sketch.
- Produce a finished concept sketch using coloured pencils that shows correct proportions, light source, and a range of tonal values.
- Present their completed design to the class, explaining the basic shapes selected, the rendering techniques applied, and the tools and materials used.

Collaborative Learning/Group work: Learners in groups brainstorm to select the type of basic shapes, rendering techniques and complex forms they want to create and the relevant tools and materials they will be using. Project-based Learning: Guide learners in groups/individuals to create complex designs with basic shapes and rendering techniques using graphite pencil and coloured pencil sketches in freehand drawing. Project-based Learning: Let learners in groups generate manual/digital pictorial reports on how they created the complex designs with basic shapes and rendering techniques using graphite pencil and coloured pencil sketches in freehand drawing. Assessment (2.1.1.AS.3). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning. Teaching and Learning Materials: - Models - Charts - reference books - drawing studio - access to internet - LCD Projector - sketches. - Pencils - Sketch pads - Erasers - Pencil sharpener - Drawing pens or ink - Blending stumps - Charcoal
