Concept Sketches

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.1.1.LI.2 - Experiment with freehand sketches to create designs in 2-point perspective with emphasis on proportions using basic shapes and rendering techniques.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define 2-point perspective and list its key features, including the horizon line, two vanishing points, and converging lines, as applied to freehand sketching.
  2. Identify and label the characteristics of 2-point perspective in given photographs, drawings, and objects in the school environment.
  3. Sketch a basic rectangular box (cuboid) in 2-point perspective freehand, maintaining reasonable proportions between its visible faces.
  4. Transform two or more basic shapes (e.g., cube, cylinder, prism) into a complex form, such as a piece of furniture or a building, using 2-point perspective construction lines.
  5. Apply at least one rendering technique (hatching, cross-hatching, or tonal shading) to a completed 2-point perspective sketch to show light, shadow, and surface depth.

Content standard
2.1.1.CS.1 - 2.1.1.CS.1 Apply the understanding of concept sketches and the techniques of rendering in designing objects in the environment. 2.1.1.LO.1 Demonstrate basic knowledge in concept sketches by creating designs through the use of basic shapes, rendering techniques, perspective and proportions.

Suggested placement
Semester 1, Week 2 (Week 2 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Group Work/Collaborative Learning: Learners in groups discuss the characteristics of 2-point perspectives with emphasis on proportions, and how they can be used to create complex forms with the aid of relevant resources such as photographs, drawings, videos, charts and actual objects in the environment.

Project-based Learning/Experiential Learning: Let learners in groups generate manual/digital pictorial charts of complex forms created using 2-point perspectives with emphasis on proportions.

Project-based Learning: Let learners in groups/individuals experiment with relevant tools and techniques to create complex forms using 2-point perspectives with emphasis on proportions and freehand sketches.

Assessment (2.1.1.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
