Indicator: 2.3.3.LI.1 - Discuss the causes of land degradation, its effects and management strategies in Ghana

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define land degradation in their own words and give at least three examples from Ghana.
  2. Explain at least four major causes of land degradation in Ghana, distinguishing between human and natural causes.
  3. Describe at least three effects of land degradation on the environment and on people’s livelihoods in Ghana.
  4. Propose and justify at least three management strategies for reducing land degradation in their own communities.
  5. Assess their own behaviour as citizens and identify which actions contribute to land degradation and which actions protect the land.

Talk for Learning: Brainstorm on the meaning of land degradation. Considering the cultural diversity and different location of learners, let them share their experiences
Experiential Learning: Embark on a fieldtrip to a nearby mines/watch a video documentary on mining and document machinery used in mining activities for presentation in groups.
Talk-for-learning: Discuss and discover in GESI responsive groups, the effects of land degradation on the environment and suggest remedies to reducing the effects. In groups, all Learners should be aware of the emotions of all members, especially the vulnerable ones.
