Maps: Their Elements and Analyses

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.2.1.LI.4 - Draw sectional profiles (annotated) and calculate vertical exaggeration and gradient

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define a sectional profile (cross section) and explain its importance in map analysis.
  2. Draw an annotated cross section between two localities on a topographic map, following the correct procedural steps.
  3. Calculate the vertical exaggeration of a drawn profile using the formula (Vertical Scale ÷ Horizontal Scale).
  4. Calculate the gradient between two points on a map using the formula (Vertical Interval ÷ Horizontal Equivalent).
  5. Interpret an annotated cross section to describe the relief and landforms between two places, and evaluate the usefulness of cross sections in real-world planning.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Collaborative learning: Using videos, maps and other relevant resources, Learners in small groups discuss the processes involved in drawing an annotated cross section between localities on a topographic map and its importance. Share their opinion with whole class. Think-pair-sharing: Work in pairs to draw an annotated cross section and calculate the vertical exaggeration of the profile.
Project-based Learning: Individually, draw an annotated cross section of two places on a topographic map and calculate the vertical exaggeration of the profile.

Assessment (2.2.1.AS.4). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.

Teaching and Learning Resources:
- Watch videos on map reduction and enlargement on mobile phones, computers/laptops.
- Printed topographical maps
- Topographical maps
- Calculator, thread, paper, measuring tape, etc.
