Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.3.2.LI.1 - Discuss the characteristics of subsistence and commercial agriculture and their importance and challenges in Ghana
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Distinguish between subsistence and commercial agriculture by stating at least three defining characteristics of each system.
- Explain the importance of both subsistence and commercial agriculture to households, communities, and the national economy of Ghana.
- Identify and describe at least three challenges facing subsistence farmers and three challenges facing commercial farmers in Ghana.
- Propose practical remedies to address at least two challenges of each agricultural system.
- Classify given farming scenarios from various Ghanaian localities as either subsistence or commercial, justifying their classification.

Collaborative learning: - In mixed groups from different localities, think-pair-share on the meaning of economic activities with emphasis on the primary economic activities and identify some of these activities in their various localities. - Brainstorm learners on the definition of agriculture and the types of agriculture production systems (crops and livestock farming). - Learners should help to expand others' emotional vocabulary and their abilities to identify physical sensations related to particular feelings. Exploratory Learning: Visit local farms that practice subsistence and commercial farming, and discuss the characteristics, importance, problems and remedies of the various forms of agriculture (subsistence and commercial) in Ghana.
