Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.1.2.LI.1 - Discuss the three types of rock, their characteristics, formational processes and their importance
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify and classify the three types of rocks (igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic) using observable characteristics from rock samples and pictures.
- Describe the formational processes of each rock type, including the role of cooling, compaction, and heat or pressure.
- Explain the importance of rocks to community and national development in Ghana, using at least three local examples.
- Distinguish between the three rock types by comparing their texture, grain size, layering, and mineral content.

Collaborative learning: Working in small groups based on people living in different relief areas, brainstorm on the different rock types and their formation. Project-based learning: In a field tour within the community, identify and discuss the importance of rocks to your community/national development. Learners should cooperate with each other during the field tour. Assessment (1.1.2.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Rock samples in the locality - Pictures and/or videos on rock types - Pictures and/or videos and other sources to show rock uses
