The Earth and Its Features

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.1.1.LI.1 - Discuss evidence of the shape of earth

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. State at least three everyday observations that prove the Earth is spherical, not flat.
  2. Explain how the curved horizon seen from a ship or aeroplane provides evidence of the Earth’s shape.
  3. Describe how lunar eclipses and the Earth’s circular shadow demonstrate the Earth’s roundness.
  4. Account for the appearance of different constellations in the northern and southern hemispheres as proof of the Earth’s curvature.
  5. Evaluate the strengths and limitations of at least three pieces of evidence using critical reasoning, and justify why the evidence collectively supports a spherical Earth.
