Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.1.1.LI.2 - Discuss the characteristics of the planets in the solar system

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

Name the eight planets in their correct order from the Sun and state their relative positions using a model of the solar system.
Compare and contrast the inner (terrestrial) planets with the outer (Jovian) planets, citing at least three differences in size, composition and surface features.
Identify at least two unique or distinguishing characteristics of each of the eight planets.
Use collaborative discussion to analyse the similarities and differences among planets and present findings to the whole class with tolerance and open-mindedness.
Construct a simple labelled model or diagram of the solar system that accurately shows the planets’ positions and relative sizes.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Group work/collaborative learning:
- In mixed ability and gender grouping, identify and discuss the position of the planets in relation to the sun using a model of the solar system. Learners should control their emotions during discussions to accept the views of others and share with whole class.
- In manageable groups, analyse the features of the eight planets, their differences and similarities iteratively while ensuring all-inclusiveness emphasising on gender differences.
