Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.3.1.LI.1

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify at least five elements of art and design (line, shape, form, colour, texture, space, value) and at least five principles of design (balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, unity, variety) from objects in their immediate environment.
  2. Distinguish clearly between elements and principles, explaining that elements are the building blocks or ingredients while principles are the rules or guidelines for arranging those ingredients.
  3. Classify given natural and man-made objects according to the elements and principles they most strongly display, with reasons for each classification.
  4. Discuss, in small groups, how at least two selected objects from their environment show the difference and similarity between elements and principles, using accurate art vocabulary.
  5. Begin assembling a personal scrapbook (manual or digital) that records examples of elements and principles found in the natural and man-made environment.
