SHS1 Art And Design Foundation · Semester 1, Week 3
Art Across Time
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.1.1.LI.3 - Identify and explain the role of materials in the environments as basic media for creative expression in indigenous Ghanaian Art.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify at least five indigenous art materials found in their local environment and classify each by its source (plant, animal, mineral, or earth).
- Explain, with specific examples, how each identified material has been used in creating indigenous Ghanaian artworks.
- Analyse the relationship between a community’s natural environment and the kinds of art forms it produces, using at least two Ghanaian communities as case studies.
- Justify, through group discussion and oral presentation, why local materials matter more than imported media for sustaining indigenous Ghanaian creative expression.
- Create a simple observational chart or sketch record showing how one local material moves from its raw state to a finished artwork.
These objectives build on the period-by-period survey from Week 1 and the historical contributions covered in Week 2. This week, the focus narrows to the raw materials themselves, the “ingredients” behind the artworks learners have already met. Later weeks will examine myths, legends, and the wider African and global impact of these traditions.
