SHS2 Applied Technology · Semester 2, Week 17

Electronic Components and Circuits

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.5.2.LI.6 - Illustrate the principles of operation of the various transistors.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  • Explain how the NPN and PNP Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJTs) operate, including the roles of the emitter, base, and collector terminals.
  • Correctly connect an NPN and a PNP transistor in a simple circuit, identifying the proper biasing for each type.
  • Describe the operation of the Junction Field Effect Transistor (J-FET) and the Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor (MOSFET), highlighting the role of the gate, drain, and source terminals.
  • Differentiate between the operation of the J-FET and the MOSFET, stating at least two key differences in their construction and control mechanism.
  • Describe how the Uni-junction Transistor (UJT) operates, including its two-base construction and its use in triggering circuits.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Task learners to: Explain the operation of the BJT transistors (PNP and NPN) and indicate the proper connection of each in a circuit. Research and Collaboration
- Organise the learners into mixed ability or gender inclusive groups, task them to do the following activities and submit report.
- Discuss the operations of the Field Effect Transistor (FET) e.g. Junction Field Effect Transistor (J- FET) and Metal Oxide Field Effect Transistor (MOSFET).
- Differentiate between the operation of the J-FET and the MOSFET
- Describe how the Uni-junction Transistor operates.

Assessment (2.5.2.AS.6). The document marks no depth-of-knowledge level for this indicator.
