Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.5.2.LI.1 - Describe types resistor as a passive electronic component

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define a resistor as a passive electronic component and explain its role in controlling current flow in a circuit.
  2. Identify and describe at least four types of resistors, including carbon film, carbon composition, wire wound, and metal film resistors, stating their key characteristics and typical applications.
  3. Explain at least three functions of resistors in electronic circuits, such as limiting current, dividing voltage, and setting bias conditions.
  4. Decode the resistance value and tolerance of a resistor using the standard colour code chart with at least 90% accuracy.
  5. Justify the choice of a particular resistor type for a given application based on power rating, tolerance, and cost.

Collaborative Learning: Using videos and pictures engage learners in mixed ability groups to undergo the following activities:
1. Define resistors
2. Outline the types of resistors e.g. wire wound, carbon resistors
3. Explain the functions of a resistor
4. Calculate the values of resistors using colour codes
Experiential Learning:
- Engage learners to work in mixed gender groups to use colour codes to calculate for the values of resistors and capacitors
- Ensure all learners participate in all varieties of practical activities and project work given. Include mixed gender groupings as well
