SHS2 Applied Technology · Semester 1, Week 3

Introduction to Engine Technology

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.1.1.LI.6: Explain the properties and classifications of engine lubricating oil and crankcase ventilation.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. State at least five key properties of engine lubricating oil and explain why each property matters for engine protection and performance.
  2. Classify engine lubricating oils using the SAE viscosity grading system and the API service classification system, giving examples for petrol and diesel engines.
  3. Explain the purpose of the crankcase ventilation system and distinguish between open-type and closed-type crankcase ventilation.
  4. Work in mixed-gender groups to examine real or chart-based samples of engine oil, identify their grades, and justify which oil suits a given vehicle and climate.
  5. Apply decision-making skills to diagnose common crankcase ventilation problems and recommend appropriate corrective actions.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Group work/collaborative learning: In a fair mixed group learners use appropriate resources to identify the properties and classifications of engine lubricating oil and explain the purpose of the crankcase ventilation and their types.
Problem based Learning: Learners work independently or in groups to identify the type of lubricants used on vehicles and brainstorm the procedure to change the engine oil.

Assessment (2.1.1.AS.6). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
