SHS2 Applied Technology · Semester 1, Week 1
Introduction to Engine Technology
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.1.1.LI.2 - Describe the construction and operation of the thermosyphon and pump assisted water-cooling systems
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Explain the purpose of the engine cooling system and state why excessive engine heat must be controlled.
- Identify and label the main components of a water-cooling system from a chart or real engine.
- Describe, in order, how coolant circulates through a thermosyphon water-cooling system.
- Describe, in order, how coolant circulates through a pump assisted water-cooling system.
- Compare the thermosyphon and pump assisted systems, stating the advantages of the pump assisted system.

Problem based Learning: Learners brainstorm in groups with views tolerated from others, to discuss the exact purpose of cooling system, and also examine the layout of thermosyphon and pump assisted water-cooling systems on a motor vehicle and present a report for discussions. Experiential learning: Learners visit a local repair or school workshop to observe the working principle of thermosyphon and pump assisted water cooled engines Assessment (2.1.1.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning. Teaching and Learning Materials: - Chart or real object - Sketches - Video/YouTube - Industrial visit
