SHS1 Applied Technology · Semester 1, Week 5

Introduction to Vehicle Technology

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.1.2.LI.2 - Evaluate the components of braking system and state their functions

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Brainstorm and explain the physical principles behind how a moving vehicle slows down or stops.
  2. Identify and label the major components of a braking system (brake pedal, master cylinder, brake lines, brake fluid, brake drums/discs, brake shoes/pads, and wheel cylinders/calipers) from sketches, charts, and models.
  3. State the function of each braking system component accurately.
  4. Evaluate the condition of braking system components by examining them on real objects or models, and predict what could happen if any component fails.
  5. Work collaboratively in mixed groups to present findings on braking system components, respecting diverse viewpoints and demonstrating inclusive participation.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Research and Collaborative Learning:
- Learners brainstorm with respect for others to share ideas on how a moving vehicle stops or slows down and the principles behind it.
- Guide learners to effectively make reference to the components of the braking system using relevant resources such as models and sketches /charts.

Assessment (1.1.2.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 3 Strategic reasoning.

Teaching and Learning Materials:
- Sketches/charts
- real vehicle transmission lines
- Models
- Models on braking system
- real object
- charts
