SHS1 Applied Technology · Semester 1, Week 4
Introduction to Vehicle Technology
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.1.2.LI.1 - Identify the components of vehicle transmission system and explain their functions
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify at least eight major components of a vehicle transmission system from charts, models, or real objects.
- Explain the function of each identified transmission component in their own words.
- Distinguish between manual and automatic transmission systems based on their key features and layouts.
- Trace the path of power flow through a conventional transmission system, from engine to wheels, using correct terminology.
- Describe the general layout of a conventional transmission system using a labelled sketch.

Group work/collaborative learning: Learners in mixed ability groups are given charts and guidelines to fairly brainstorm to identify types of transmission systems used in vehicles such as manual and automatic transmission as well as the layout of the conventional transmission system Experiential learning: educational visit to local vehicle repair workshop where functions of transmission system components are explained to the students for efficient understanding Assessment (1.1.2.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding. Teaching and Learning Materials: - Sketches/charts - real vehicle transmission lines - Models - Models on braking system - real object - charts
