Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.4.2.LI.3 - Calculate the incidence of taxation for the producer and consumer.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define tax incidence and distinguish between the tax burden borne by producers and that borne by consumers.
  2. Explain how the price elasticity of demand and supply determines who bears a greater share of a tax.
  3. Calculate the incidence of a specific tax on a producer and a consumer using given market data.
  4. Use Microsoft Excel to compute tax incidence figures and present findings in a short group report.
  5. Justify, with reasoning, whether a given tax policy in Ghana (for example, on imported goods or telecommunications) shifts more burden to consumers or producers.
