SHS1 Agriculture · Semester 2, Week 4
Principles of Natural Resource Conservation in Agriculture
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.3.2.LI.2 - Discuss the concepts and the importance of the interrelations between forestry and Agriculture.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define the terms “interrelation,” “forestry,” and “agriculture” in their own words and explain what it means for two systems to be interdependent.
- Identify at least four specific ways in which forestry supports agricultural production (for example, soil protection, water regulation, windbreaks, and microclimate moderation).
- Identify at least four specific ways in which agriculture affects forestry (both positive, such as planned tree planting, and negative, such as bush burning and deforestation for farmland).
- Construct a labelled diagram showing the interdependence between forestry and agriculture, with arrows indicating the direction of each relationship.
- Explain, using concrete Ghanaian examples, why the destruction of forests ultimately threatens food production and why forest conservation is therefore an agricultural concern.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
Talk for learning: In mixed ability groups, surf the internet to come up with interdependence of Agriculture and forestry. Provide support for learners who have challenges with websites and links to come up with the interdependence between Agriculture and industry. Encourage talented learners to explain the interdependence between Agriculture and forestry. Ensure that learners do not switch to other sites which are not related to the topic. Project-based learning: In mixed-gender groups (where applicable) learners prepare a diagram to show the interdependence of Agriculture and forestry and present their results. Ensure that all learners participate in the group activity. Groups with difficulties in preparing the diagram should be assisted with guiding questions. Learners should be encouraged to elect their group leaders. Assessment (1.3.2.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
