Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.1.2.LI.3 - Identify and describe the role of biosafety professionals in biomedical research laboratories.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. State at least five specific duties of a biosafety professional in a biomedical research laboratory.
  2. Explain how a biosafety professional minimises infectious disease risks to laboratory personnel and the community.
  3. Describe the relationship between biosafety professionals and other laboratory staff in ensuring compliance with safety policies.
  4. Analyse a laboratory scenario and identify which responses or actions fall under the responsibility of the biosafety professional.
  5. Write a short report summarising the role of biosafety professionals, drawing on a talk, visit, or research sources.

Exploratory Learning: Embark on a visit to a biomedical laboratory or invite a biosafety professional to give a talk on the role of biosafety officers in minimizing infectious disease risks to persons.
Project-Based Learning: Work individually to write a report based on the interaction with the resource person (and also be researching from other sources) about the role of biosafety officers in ensuring compliance with safety policies and procedures.
