Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.1.2.LI.3 - Identify and describe the role of biosafety professionals in biomedical research laboratories.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

State at least five specific duties of a biosafety professional in a biomedical research laboratory.
Explain how a biosafety professional minimises infectious disease risks to laboratory personnel and the community.
Describe the relationship between biosafety professionals and other laboratory staff in ensuring compliance with safety policies.
Analyse a laboratory scenario and identify which responses or actions fall under the responsibility of the biosafety professional.
Write a short report summarising the role of biosafety professionals, drawing on a talk, visit, or research sources.

Exploratory Learning: Embark on a visit to a biomedical laboratory or invite a biosafety professional to give a talk on the role of biosafety officers in minimizing infectious disease risks to persons.
Project-Based Learning: Work individually to write a report based on the interaction with the resource person (and also be researching from other sources) about the role of biosafety officers in ensuring compliance with safety policies and procedures.
