Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.4.1.LI.2 - Apply knowledge of specified statistical analysis methods to analyse the results of experimental studies.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify the independent and dependent variables in a given biomedical experiment and state the hypothesis being tested.
  2. Calculate the mean, median, and mode of a data set from a biomedical study and explain what each measure tells the researcher.
  3. Compute the range, variance, and standard deviation of a data set and interpret the spread of the data in plain language.
  4. Construct a scatter plot or histogram of experimental data and explain how changing the scale on the y-axis can exaggerate or diminish the visual effect of the results.
  5. Discuss how sample size affects how well a study’s results represent the wider population, using examples from the data analysed in class.

Structured Talk for Learning: Engage in a discussion on the explanation and identification of dependent and independent variables of a sample biomedical study. Discuss statistical measures and effect of sample size on the representation of a population.
Activity-Based Learning: Using data from the study, learners calculate measures of central tendency (mean, median, and mode) and measures of variability (range, variance and standard deviation). On scatter plots or histograms, learners are tasked to change scales on the y-axis (ordinate) for the plot the same data and observe how changes in scale may exaggerate or diminish an outcome.
