Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.3.1.LI.3 - Discuss the bioinstrumentation principles used in the construction of a diagnostic device.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define bioinstrumentation and list at least four basic principles that guide the design of diagnostic devices.
  2. Explain how access to measurement, accuracy, sensitivity and specificity affect the performance of a diagnostic device.
  3. Describe how the principles of calibration and signal processing are applied in a familiar diagnostic device such as a thermometer or blood pressure monitor.
  4. Discuss at least two safety principles that must be considered before a diagnostic device can be used on a patient.
  5. Compare the trade-offs between sensitivity and specificity using examples of common diagnostic tests.
