Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.2.2.LI.5 - Discuss the global and social impact of an infectious disease that is caused by bacteria and viruses
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify at least three infectious diseases caused by bacteria and three caused by viruses, stating their mode of transmission for each.
- Describe the global impact of a named infectious disease, including statistics on spread, mortality, and economic cost, using at least two specific examples such as COVID-19 or tuberculosis.
- Explain the social consequences of infectious diseases on families, communities, and national development, referencing stigma, school closures, and loss of livelihoods.
- Compare the societal responses to a bacterial outbreak (such as cholera or tuberculosis) and a viral outbreak (such as COVID-19), noting similarities and differences in control measures.
- Create a simple public health poster or message that communicates prevention strategies for a chosen infectious disease to peers, evaluating its potential effectiveness.

Collaborative Learning: With the aid of charts and resources, identify the commonalities between bacterial infections in terms of their symptoms and treatment. Share experience on symptoms, prevalence, and treatment of viral infections in groups. Digital Learning: Research and develop PowerPoint presentations on social and global impact of infectious diseases(e.g, COVID) for class presentation and feedback. Project-Based Learning: Learners design and produce a public health campaign to educate peers about the dangers and prevention of infectious diseases on posters. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Videos - Stained slides - Pictures - Charts - Projector Assessment (2.2.2.AS.5). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
