Diseases and Disorders

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.2.2.LI.3 - Explore the immune response in relation to the introduction of antigens.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define the terms “immune response” and “antigen” in their own words and give at least three examples of common antigens.
  2. Describe the sequence of events that occurs when an antigen enters the body, including recognition, response, and memory.
  3. Classify antigens into three types: exogenous, endogenous, and autoantigens, giving at least one example of each.
  4. Explain how the body’s first exposure to an antigen differs from a second exposure to the same antigen, using the concept of immune memory.
  5. Distinguish between the innate and adaptive immune responses and state the role of each in protecting the body against infection.

Suggested placement
Semester 2, Week 2 (Week 22 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Managing Talk for Learning: Teacher leads a discussion with the class on ways they think the body responds to the invasion of foreign and harmful materials. Engage in a discussion on immune response and the meaning of the term "antigens"
Activity-Based Learning: Learners watch videos and pictures (or refer to books and other sources) to group identified antigens as exogenous (foreign to the host immune system), endogenous
(produced by intracellular bacteria and virus replicating inside a host cell), and autoantigens (produced by the host).
Teaching and Learning Resources:
- Videos
- Stained slides
- Pictures
- Charts

Assessment (2.2.2.AS.3). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
