Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.2.2.LI.2 - Interpret the symptoms and physical characteristics of a given patient to determine a Hyperthyroidism endocrine system malfunction (e.g., ).
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Recall at least four signs and symptoms of hyperthyroidism, including weight loss, heat intolerance, palpitations, and exophthalmos (bulging eyes).
- Interpret a patient case scenario and correctly identify hyperthyroidism as the likely endocrine malfunction based on presented symptoms and physical characteristics.
- Explain how excess thyroid hormone affects at least three other body systems, such as the cardiovascular, digestive, and nervous systems.
- Differentiate between hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism by comparing their key symptoms and physical signs.
- Justify their diagnosis using evidence from a patient case and communicate their reasoning clearly to peers during group presentation.

Digital Learning: Watch a video or listen to a PowerPoint presentation on the endocrine system, its functions, defects and symptoms of its malfunctioning. Talk for Learning: - Brainstorm on how the body makes and releases hormones that control mood, development and growth; enumerate the functions of hormones (at least two each) that control mood, development and growth. - Based on the previous discourse on the functions of hormones, learners suggest and discuss possible symptoms and characteristics of a patient with specified endocrine system malfunction. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Projector - Anatomical model - Pictures - Charts sample blood sugar tests - Glucometer - Anatomical models - Pictures - Charts Assessment (2.2.2.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
