Anatomy and Physiology
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.2.1.LI.2 - Explain the interconnections between the human body systems and how these systems work together to maintain health and homeostasis.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define homeostasis and identify at least three body systems that work together to maintain it.
- Explain at least two specific examples of how two or more body systems interconnect to perform a shared function (e.g., digestion and circulation; respiration and circulation).
- Create a concept map or mind map showing the relationships between at least four body systems and their roles in maintaining health.
- Predict what happens to the body when the interconnection between two systems is disrupted (e.g., what occurs when the respiratory and circulatory systems fail to communicate effectively).
- Justify, using a Ghanaian health scenario, why no single body system works in isolation to keep a person alive and healthy.
This lesson builds on Week 11 (1.2.1.LI.1) where learners explored the structure and functions of major body systems. It prepares them for Week 13 (1.2.1.LI.3), where they will evaluate these interconnections in greater depth.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
Collaborative Learning: Work in groups to establish the relationship among body systems in performing specific body functions (e.g., how the digestive system affects the muscle and skeletal systems) using available resources (e.g., videos, PowerPoint presentations, textbooks or webpages). Activity-Based Learning: Create concept maps to link different body systems that work together to perform various functions. Initiating Talk for Learning: Engage learners in a class discussion to explain homeostasis and how the body achieves homeostasis. Learners identify systems working together to maintain homeostasis and health of an individual. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Textbook - Anatomical models - Anatomical diagrams - Virtual anatomical visualization platforms - Videos - Charts Assessment (1.2.1.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
