SHS1 Biomedical Science · Semester 1, Week 3
Biomedical Science Practice
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.1.1.LI.3 - Explain how the scientific method can be applied to undertake investigations or address problems in biomedical science.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- List all six steps of the scientific method in their correct order without reference to notes.
- Explain, in their own words, how each step of the scientific method is applied to a biomedical science investigation.
- Formulate a testable hypothesis related to a local health or biomedical problem in their community.
- Design a simple investigation using the scientific method to address a selected biomedical problem, identifying variables and expected outcomes.
- Present their investigation plan to peers, justifying how each step of the scientific method helps solve the identified problem.

Structuring Talk for Learning: In a group discussion, initiate an interactive talk session on how a local problem could be addressed through the scientific method, focusing on the main steps of the scientific method. Problem-Based Learning: In mixed-ability groups develop a hypothesis on a local/societal problem that falls under the field of biomedical science. Develop a PowerPoint/poster presentation on how the hypothesis can be investigated using the scientific method. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Video - Documentaries - Pictures - Online resources - Glocal articles - Reports - Pictures - Charts - Textbook Assessment (1.1.1.AS.3). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
