Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.2.1.LI.3 - Illustrate avionics systems in relation to the monitoring abilities of dogs or other animals in security for surveillance.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define aerospace surveillance systems and list at least three examples of such systems used in aircraft and spacecraft.
- Compare the monitoring abilities of dogs, lions, and other animals with the functions of aerospace surveillance systems, identifying at least three points of similarity.
- Sketch a labelled diagram showing how an aerospace surveillance system tracks an aircraft, using animal surveillance as the organising analogy.
- Explain at least two limitations of animal surveillance that aerospace surveillance systems overcome, using examples from security and aviation.
- Evaluate a given aviation scenario and recommend which surveillance capability (detection, tracking, or identification) is needed, justifying the choice.
Note: This lesson builds on Week 13 (communication through drums and dance) and Week 14 (navigation through flocking birds). The detailed functions of surveillance systems, including radar and transponder operation, are scheduled for Semester 2, Week 1, so this lesson focuses on the broad concept and analogy, not the technical specifics.
