SHS1 Aviation And Aerospace Engineering · Semester 1, Week 13

Fundamentals of Avionics

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.2.1.LI.1 - Discuss avionics systems in relation to traditional musical instruments and dance for communication.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Describe how traditional Ghanaian musical instruments, such as the talking drum, send messages over distances.
  2. Compare the parts and functions of a traditional drumming system with the parts and functions of an avionics communication system.
  3. Explain how rhythm, pitch and pattern in drum language parallel the use of radio waves, codes and signals in aircraft communication.
  4. Discuss how traditional dance and body movement carry messages, and relate this to how visual signals (like lights and flags) communicate in aviation.
  5. Evaluate at least one advantage and one limitation of traditional instrument communication compared to modern avionics communication.

Building on What Others Say, Talk for Learning:
- Explore learners' experiences with traditional instruments for demonstration of communication technologies. Through question and answer sessions, learners take turns in talking about how the instruments work. Encourage as many learners as possible to share their experiences freely and with respect for one another's views.
- A resource person who uses sign language/traditional instruments for communication, e.g., drums, flute, etc. should demonstrate to students the use of the instruments for communication.
Teaching and Learning Resources:
- Books about avionics systems, e.g., Introduction to Avionics (by R. P. G. Collinson), Aircraft
