Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.3.4.LI.1 - Discuss the concepts and principles of coaching and officiating of net games.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  • Define the terms “coaching” and “officiating” in the context of net games such as badminton, tennis, table tennis and volleyball.
  • Explain at least four key principles of effective coaching (e.g., communication, motivation, planning, feedback) and four principles of officiating (e.g., impartiality, consistency, knowledge of rules, game management).
  • Distinguish between the roles and responsibilities of a coach and those of an official in a net game.
  • Discuss, in small groups, how coaching and officiating principles apply to a specific net game, and present findings to the class with justification.
  • Reflect on the importance of respect, tolerance and unity in coaching and officiating relationships, applying Ghanaian values of fair play.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Group work: Learners in groups, research from available relevant sources such as; (books, journals, internet, etc.) and discuss concepts and principles of coaching and officiating of net games. Learners make presentations to justify their findings.
Activity-based learning: Using suitable approaches, learners plan on coaching and officiating net games for execution. Learners share plans with the whole class for comments. Encourage them to learn to tolerate and respect other's opinions.
