SHS1 Chemistry · Semester 2, Week 19

Organic Functional groups

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Explain, in their own words, what a homologous series is and state the general characteristics of members of a homologous series.
  2. Write down the homologous series for alkanes and alkenes using molecular, condensed, and structural formulae.
  3. Compare and contrast successive members of a homologous series, identifying the constant increment (CH2) and the trend in physical properties.
  4. Predict the molecular formula, condensed formula, and structural formula of a given member of a homologous series when given the formulae of neighbouring members.
  5. Justify why members of the same homologous series show similar chemical properties but gradually changing physical properties.

Indicator: 1.3.2.LI.2 - Explain homologous series and state their properties.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Talk for Learning: Deduce the meaning of homologous series using the inductive approach.
Inquiry-Based Learning:
- Write down the homologous series for alkanes and alkenes.
- Discuss the properties of homologous series based on the example.
- Demonstrate ways of representing organic compounds (molecular formula, condensed formula and structural formula) with the aid of charts, models etc.
Teaching and Learning Materials:
- * Work sheet for learners to tabulate the differences of organic compounds. * Molecular models to represent organic functional groups
- YEAR TWO
Assessment (1.3.2.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
