Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.1.1.LI.2 - Discuss and explain safety rules and hazard symbols in the laboratory.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- State at least eight safety rules that must be followed in the Chemistry laboratory and explain the reason for each rule.
- Identify and sketch at least six hazard symbols found on chemical containers, electrical gadgets and household items, and explain what each symbol means.
- Categorise hazard symbols under the headings: corrosive, toxic, oxidising, flammable, explosive, radioactive, irritant/harmful and biohazard.
- Distinguish between hazard signs, prohibition signs and first aid signs, giving examples of each.
- Demonstrate correct use of personal protective equipment (chemical goggles, hand gloves, apron/laboratory coat) and identify safety equipment (eye wash station, safety shower, fume chamber) and explain when each is used.
