Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.4.1.LI.1 - Review the elements of poetry

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

Recall and define at least eight elements of poetry from memory, including theme, tone, mood, imagery, diction, rhyme, rhythm and figurative language.
Identify elements of poetry in a given poem and cite specific lines or phrases as evidence for each element found.
Explain in their own words how a poet uses particular elements to create meaning or effect in a poem.
Work collaboratively in mixed-ability groups to brainstorm, organise and present the elements of poetry using ethically academic language.

Different task group learning:

- Learners in groups (mixed-ability plus gender) brainstorm the elements of poetry. Learners share ideas by communicating confidently and effectively using ethically academic language.

- In groups, they learn to respect others, different beliefs, religion and cultures.

- Learners think critically and creatively to organise their work for presentation. Learners show empathy and respect while learning to take turns at contributing to discussion.
