Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.3.2.LI.1 - Appreciate drama texts for their empathetic effects using the dramatic tools.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify the key dramatic tools (dialogue, soliloquy, aside, monologue, stage directions, and dramatic irony) used in a given speech from a drama text.
  2. Explain how a character’s speech reveals that character’s emotions, motivations, and inner conflicts.
  3. Analyse a selected speech and articulate how it creates an empathetic effect (a feeling of shared emotion with the character) in an audience.
  4. Work in pairs and groups to role-play or present a short character speech, demonstrating empathy and respect for the character’s situation.
  5. Give constructive feedback on peers’ presentations, using the language of dramatic tools to justify their observations.

Task Group

- In Task Groups review dramatic tools. The dramatic tools are creatively presented in skits/songs/poetry by the learners.

- Select important speeches of main characters to appreciate their empathetic effects. Work in pairs and discuss with another pair. Reflect and use strategy to work on other speeches individually.

- Work together to develop empathy and respect to help others feel belonged.
