Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.2.2.LI.4 - Examine the characterisation techniques of the writer.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define characterisation and distinguish between direct and indirect characterisation techniques.
  2. Identify at least four characterisation techniques used by a writer in a given prose passage, citing textual evidence.
  3. Explain the role of a foil in revealing the traits of a main character, using examples from the prescribed text.
  4. Compare and contrast two characters from the prescribed text, noting the specific techniques the writer uses to reveal each character.
  5. Write a short paragraph analysing how a writer’s characterisation techniques contribute to the development of a theme in the text.
