Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.4.2.LI.2 - Use the knowledge on poetic elements and devices to critique a poem and write out complete essay by citing strong and exhaustive textual evidence

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify the poetic elements and devices in a given poem and explain how they contribute to the poem’s overall meaning.
  2. Critique a poem by responding to guiding questions on setting, speaker, clarity, imagery, sound, and form.
  3. Apply the PEE (Point, Evidence, Explanation) approach to structure paragraphs in a poetry essay.
  4. Write a complete critical essay on a poem, citing strong and exhaustive textual evidence to support each point.
  5. Assess a peer’s essay using a simple checklist based on the PEE format and the guiding critique questions.
