Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.4.1.LI.2 - Distinguish between the features of lyrical poems in context.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify at least five distinct features of lyrical poems (figurative language, structure, mood, rhyme, rhythm, and others) in a given poem.
  2. Distinguish between the features of a lyrical poem and those of a narrative or dramatic poem by comparing two short texts.
  3. Explain how a specific feature (e.g., rhyme scheme, repetition, imagery) contributes to the overall mood and meaning of a lyrical poem.
  4. Listen to an audio version or song and identify its lyrical features with appropriate attention to stress and rhythm.
  5. Work collaboratively in groups to present a short oral analysis of a poem, using appropriate literary language to describe its features.

Experiential Learning/Discussions:

- The distinct features of lyrical poems e.g., figurative language, structure, mood, rhyme and rhythm. Listen to audio versions of poems and search for level appropriate interesting examples in groups.

- Learners think critically and creatively to explore the features used in lyrical poems as they share ideas and learn from others.

Brainstorming/Experiential Learning:

- Brainstorm to elicit Personal Response

- Play an age-appropriate contemporary song and have students listen and write down the lyrics on the second occasion/listening with appropriate stress and rhythm.

- Learners think critically to identify the differences within and between the forms/types. Also, as learners write they develop creativity and leadership to express a sense of belongingness, self-awareness and obedience in a team.
