Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.3.2.LI.2 - Explain how themes, style and language are developed to bring out the main concerns of drama texts

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Explain how a theme is developed through the actions, dialogue and decisions of characters in a drama text.
  2. Identify specific features of style (such as repetition, symbolism, irony and contrast) used by a playwright and explain how each feature develops the main concerns of the text.
  3. Analyse how language, including figurative expressions, dialect and tone, is used to reveal character and reinforce the central concerns of a drama text.
  4. Write a short critical essay that explains how a playwright combines theme, style and language to bring out a main concern, citing textual evidence.
  5. Critique their own draft essay and a partner’s essay using a provided guide, and incorporate feedback into a revised version.
