Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.2.1.LI.2 - Compare the elements of fiction and non-fiction

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Distinguish between the defining elements of fiction and non-fiction prose texts, citing specific evidence from texts read in Week 1.
  2. Compare and contrast fiction and non-fiction using a structured comparison chart that identifies at least four shared and four distinct elements.
  3. Interview a classmate about a biography or autobiography they have read and identify whether elements of imagination or fantasy appear in the work, justifying their judgement with examples.
  4. Present findings from group discussions to show what fiction and non-fiction have in common, using the specific literacy and language of Literature (plot, character, setting, theme, point of view, style).
  5. Apply critical thinking to evaluate whether imagination plays a legitimate role in non-fiction writing, and defend their position with reasoned arguments.
