Knowing Your Dramatic Elements

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.3.1.LI.1 - Review knowledge in elements of prose and apply them in the discussion of elements of drama

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Recall and state the key elements of prose (plot, setting, characterisation, theme, point of view, style) from their Junior High School studies.
  2. Compare and contrast the elements of prose with the elements of drama, identifying which elements are shared and which are unique to each genre.
  3. Define the basic dramatic elements (plot, setting, characterisation, dialogue, stage directions, conflict) using accurate literary terminology.
  4. Identify examples of dramatic elements in short excerpts from local drama texts or a familiar television drama series.
  5. Work collaboratively in mixed-ability groups to present findings on how dramatic elements function in a selected text, using appropriate academic language.

This lesson positions learners at the start of the drama strand. It deliberately reviews prose elements to build a bridge into drama, so that learners see drama as a related but distinct genre. Later lessons (Weeks 17 to 20) will treat plot, setting and characterisation in depth; this lesson only introduces them so learners can name them and see them working.

Talk for Learning:

- Learners in mixed-ability/gender groups, brainstorm the elements of plot and share their findings with the class. Mixed ability grouping will enable learners embrace diversity and inclusion as they work together. Learners will also use academic language in their discussions.

- Have learners present their work by developing presentation skills.

Assessment (1.3.1.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
