Learning Objectives

Indicator: B7.1.1.1.1 (as normalised from 1.1.1.LI.3): Compare and contrast the relationship between genres in oral and written literature.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define the term “genre” and list at least four genres common to both oral and written literature.
  2. Identify the shared features (similarities) between a given oral genre and its written counterpart, using specific examples from Ghanaian oral tradition and published texts.
  3. Explain at least three key differences between how a genre functions in oral performance versus written form.
  4. Work collaboratively in mixed-ability groups to compare a folktale (oral) with a short story (written) and present their findings using appropriate academic language.
  5. Apply their understanding by creating a short original piece in one genre and explaining how it relates to its oral or written counterpart.
