SHS3 Engineering · Semester 1, Week 18

Circuits and Machines

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.2.1.LI.4 - Explain the safety measures associated with the use of the various electrical machines.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. List at least five specific safety precautions to observe when operating transformers, AC/DC motors, AC/DC generators, and special electrical machines.
  2. Explain the reason or relevance behind each listed safety precaution, linking the precaution to the risk it prevents (e.g., electric shock, fire, mechanical injury).
  3. Demonstrate the correct sequence for safely connecting, operating, and disconnecting an electrical machine during a practical group activity.
  4. Identify unsafe practices shown in video clips or described in scenarios and suggest the correct safety measure for each situation.
  5. Create a simple safety checklist for operating one electrical machine of their choice, suitable for display in a school workshop.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Collaborative Learning: In mixed-ability groups, learners use a type of machine and discuss the safety precautions that should be observed when operating the various electrical machines.
Experiential Learning: Learners watch videos on safety precautions in the use of electrical machines. Through questioning, learners provide a comprehensive list of precautionary measures and their relevance.

Assessment (3.2.1.AS.4). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding.
