SHS3 Engineering · Semester 1, Week 16
Circuits and Machines
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 3.2.1.LI.2 - Explain the uses of transformers, DC & AC motors, DC and AC generators, and special electrical machines (i.e., stepper motors, servo motors, etc.)
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- State the primary function of a transformer and distinguish between step-up and step-down transformers, giving one real-life use of each.
- Explain at least three uses each of DC motors and AC motors in everyday appliances and industrial settings in Ghana.
- Describe the uses of DC generators and AC generators, and identify where each type is commonly found in power generation and local applications.
- Explain the unique uses of special electrical machines, specifically stepper motors and servo motors, in precision applications.
- Match each electrical machine to its appropriate application scenario and justify the choice using a reason related to the machine’s characteristics.

Experiential Learning: Learners watch videos about the applications of the various machines. Learners share their observations on the uses of the various electrical machines. Assessment (3.2.1.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Videos on the applications of electrical machines - Projector - Laptop - Transformers - AC and DC generators - AC and DC motors - special electrical machines, including stepper and servo motor - Videos on the applications of electrical machines - Videos on safety measures in the use of electrical machines.
