SHS1 Engineering · Semester 2, Week 6

Energy Efficiency and Conservation

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.2.3.LI.3 - Extract data from nameplates of equipment.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify and state the purpose of at least five different types of information found on a typical equipment nameplate (such as voltage, current, power rating, frequency, and serial number).
  2. Locate nameplates on common electrical and mechanical equipment found in homes, schools, and renewable energy installations.
  3. Extract and record key technical data from at least three different equipment nameplates (actual or photographs) presented in class.
  4. Interpret the meaning of common units and abbreviations found on nameplates, including W, kW, V, A, Hz, and RPM.
  5. Explain the relevance of nameplate data for energy efficiency, safety, and proper equipment selection in renewable energy systems.

Initiating Talk for Learning: Through a question and answer session, individual learners explain what a nameplate is and its relevance. Learners are presented with nameplates (actual or photographs) of various equipment for them to inspect and share with the whole class.

Assessment (1.2.3.AS.3). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding.

Teaching and Learning Resources:
- Projector
- Laptops and assorted instruments used to measure electrical and non-electrical quantities in renewable energy systems.
- Installed renewable energy systems and assorted instruments used to measure electrical and non-electrical quantities in renewable energy systems.
- Nameplates (actual or photographs) of equipment.
