SHS1 Engineering · Semester 1, Week 7
Health and Safety in Engineering Practice
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.1.2.LI.2 - Identify the causes of accidents in engineering practice and explain their effects.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- List at least five major causes of accidents in engineering practice.
- Explain how each cause leads to specific types of accidents in the workshop.
- Describe at least three effects of accidents on the individual worker, the workshop, and the wider community.
- Analyse a video or picture of an engineering accident and identify the likely cause(s) and potential effects.
- Suggest simple preventive measures linked to each cause of accidents identified.

Initiating Talk for Learning: In a question-and-answer session, learners' views on the causes of various accidents in engineering practice and their effects. In pairs, learners think and share views on the effects of accidents. Organise learners' thoughts on each accident using concept maps. Experiential Learning and Collaborative Learning: Learners watch a video on accidents in engineering practice and in groups and discuss the causes of the accidents and what could have been done to prevent them. Assessment (1.1.2.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Projector - Laptop - Videos and pictures of accidents in engineering practice - Videos on health and safety in the use of workshop tools/machinery. - Various workshop tools and machinery
