Engineering in Society
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.1.1.LI.5 - Explain the unique knowledge requirement of the disciplines - careers.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify at least three engineering disciplines and state the unique body of knowledge required for each.
- Explain the difference between the knowledge required by an engineering discipline and the common skills shared across all engineering fields (building on Week 4).
- Describe the pathway from secondary school through to a specific engineering career, including the subjects and qualifications required.
- Create a concept map showing the unique knowledge requirements of at least four engineering disciplines.
- Justify why an engineer in one discipline cannot simply perform the work of an engineer in another discipline without additional training.

Managing Talk for Learning: In a moderated discussion, learners explain the unique knowledge requirement of the engineering disciplines. Organise or summarise their thoughts using webbing or concept maps Building on What Others say: Other groups add to the content presented by each group in a respectful manner. Groups should be encouraged to tolerate others' views. Assessment (1.1.1.AS.5). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding.
