Learning Objectives
Indicator: 3.2.1.LI.3 - Discuss the relevance of the existence of separation of powers, checks and balances in Ghana.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Explain at least three reasons why separation of powers is important for democratic governance in Ghana.
- Justify the existence of checks and balances in Ghana’s Fourth Republican Constitution with reference to specific constitutional provisions.
- Analyse a real or hypothetical conflict between arms of government in Ghana and show how checks and balances resolve it.
- Assess the consequences for Ghana’s democracy if separation of powers and checks and balances were removed from the 1992 Constitution.
- Demonstrate the values of fairness, justice, equality and discipline while participating in group discussions and presentations on this topic.
