Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.2.1.LI.2 - Discuss the significance of the legislature in a democratic state

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Explain at least three major functions of the legislature in a democratic state, using the Parliament of Ghana as the primary example.
  2. Analyse why law-making, representation, oversight, and financial control are essential to the health of a democracy.
  3. Discuss how the legislature ensures checks and balances on the executive, referring to specific provisions of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.
  4. Evaluate the challenges facing the Parliament of Ghana and propose practical reforms to strengthen its effectiveness.
  5. Appreciate the importance of fair representation, including gender equity, in making the legislature truly democratic.
