Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.1.1.LI.2 - Discuss how citizenship is acquired in Ghana
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- State the two principal ways by which citizenship is acquired in Ghana, namely citizenship by birth and citizenship by registration or naturalisation.
- Explain the constitutional conditions for acquiring Ghanaian citizenship by birth, including the provisions for children born in and outside Ghana.
- Describe the conditions under which a foreigner may be registered as a Ghanaian citizen, including marriage to a Ghanaian citizen.
- Distinguish between citizenship by registration and citizenship by naturalisation, and outline the requirements for each.
- Analyse a case scenario and determine whether a person qualifies as a Ghanaian citizen, citing the relevant provisions of the 1992 Constitution.
